Oil on Canvas. Canvas has been used for oil painting for centuries. Early canvas was made of linen until the introduction of cotton canvas in the 20th century. However, linen is still the favored fabric for use in oil painting.

One of the most outstanding differences between modern painting techniques and those of the Flemish and Dutch Masters is in the preparation of the canvas. “Modern” techniques take advantage of both the canvas texture as well as those of the paint itself. Renaissance masters took extreme measures to ensure that none of the texture of the canvas came through. Reference: Wikipedia

19th Century Watercolors. Watercolors were popular during the 19th century with both professional artists and amateur artists. Many of the elite, aristocratic families had access to world travel and this medium was an excellent way to capture different countries and cultures in the same way that later photography would capture.

Watercolors were also and excellent way to capture botanic and zoological subjects for both personal learning and for book illustrations.

Miniature portraits were still popular and watercolor would often be used on ivory to produce tiny pendants and other miniature works of are.
